NIGERIA: A PRAYING COUNTRY STILL A SUFFERING COUNTRY. WHY?
Many people are beginning to ask questions about the efficacy of prayers being said for Nigeria by concerned Christians all over the country. Recently I attended a Christian meeting in which someone pointed out that those nations where people are NOT so prayerful are faring better than Nigeria which is reputed to be the most “religious” societies on earth. (Yes, the most religious country is ‘Naija’). Confirm this claim here: (http://allafrica.com/stories/200403010103.html).
I am not surprised at all that indeed, many nations where the concept of God is deemed to be superstitious are not bogged down with so many seemingly intractable social and economic problems. The social and economic indices in some of these nations are moving in the right directions in spite of their apparent ‘Godlessness’. So, what on earth is happening to the prayers of Nigerians? Well, read this:
Pro 15:8 The LORD is pleased when good people pray, but hates the sacrifices that the wicked bring him.
The issue raised here is the crux of the matter. People whose hands are soiled with the mess of the land will only succeed in praying ‘over the bar’ prayers. God cannot be mocked. Whatever we sow, we shall reap.
How then can prayers for ‘naija’ be effective? Only if such prayers come from ‘qualified’ people. Well, read this Bible passage:
“LORD, who may enter your Temple? Who may worship on Zion, your sacred hill? Those who obey God in everything and always do what is right, whose words are true and sincere, and who do not slander others. They do no wrong to their friends nor spread rumors about their neighbors. They despise those whom God rejects, but honor those who obey the LORD. They always do what they promise, no matter how much it may cost. They make loans without charging interest and cannot be bribed to testify against the innocent. Whoever does these things will always be secure”. (Ps. 15)
You can now see that:
• The praying person must be holy.
• Good motives are essential.
• The person must not be a defender of the wicked politicians EVEN IF SUCH POLITICIANS ARE RELATIONS, FRIENDS OR BENEFACTORS.
• The person must not be directly or indirectly a partaker in or a beneficiary of the rot in the land.
• The person must be exemplary in brightening her/his own corner.
• The praying person must always take a stand against evil and confront it when necessary
I am sure you can now see the reason why prayers for 'naija' have been going 'over the bar'. Let’s thank God though for showing mercy so far on account of the few whose prayers go for goal.
If you are sure you are NOT part of the problem, keep on praying and standing for justice and good governance. GOD DEY! Something will happen soon!
